Trix and Robert Haussmann form what is probably the internationally best-known architect couple in Switzerland. Their joint work began in 1967 with the founding of the office that later became known as "Allgemeine Gestaltungsanstalt Zürich", questioned modernity and redesigned the areas of design, interior design and architecture. Robert Haussmann taught at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, the ETH Zurich and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Trix Haussmann also at the ETH Zurich. In 2013, the two were honored with the Grand Prix Design Schweiz.
This new volume in the series "Protagonists of Swiss Living Culture" examines the arc of tension between the early and late phase of Haussmann's work. Based on in-depth insights into individual projects, he provides information on how the Haussmanns playfully, fluently and consistently made the transition from modernism to "manierismo critico", how they took up and implemented the social change between the late 1960s and the 1980s, and always staying true to themselves. The (chrono-)logical sequence of their work is presented with numerous images and documents, so that the contrary positions are comprehensible and illustrated as a continuum.
Joan Billing and Samuel Eberli founded Design+Design in 2007. As curators and publishers, they salvage hidden treasures from Swiss design history and present them to the public through publications and exhibitions.
